garden beds - does anyone use covering ?
I seen an article once where someone attached pvc pipe to the sides of their beds, then ran fiberglass poles in a hoop and attached a sunscreen/mesh to cover the beds with. The idea was to protect from hail and/or birds. If your in a real hot area, the summer sun could kill some of your plants also ?

Yes. A number of plants don't like it hot and can benefit from shade. Lettuce is the first that comes to mind--most cool weather crops you would not even attempt to grow during the summer heat. Broccoli (and the many other brassicas), peas and spinach also don't grow well in the heat and are planted spring and fall.

I need to devise some sort of covering for my gardens now that I have the chickens. I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to use, so I'll be watching this thread & will post back if I see anything useful.

Here's an idea that looks pretty cheap and easy:
